THE BIG FIREPLACE... SUURIN TAKKA...

The fireplace which is hidden behind this smaller one is one of the oldest in this house, dating back to 1400th century. We have been wanting to keep it, but on the other hand it is right in the middle of the big room... The mason had a good look at it, as we did it too and it seems that it is not so stable... So it has to come down and even if we want to keep it... It has to be rebuild it again...

...So to start demolishing the fireplace, we had to start from the chimney... Which is really high starting from the bottom then going through one of the bedrooms with an other fireplace and through the attic on to the top of the roof...

Our hardworking demolition team started first by taking the stone parts off from the bigger fireplace, these stone parts we can use in an other fireplace later...

Meidän urhea purkaustiimi aloitti kuitenkin alhaalta... ensiksi piti poistaa pienemmän takan koristeelliset kivet, joita voimme myöhemmin käyttää muualla...

So this the fireplace in the bedroom or actually what was left of it after demolishing the front covered with plaster and the wooden parts were carefully removed and we will keep them... Then the stone wall next to the fireplace will come down as well... and as I am writing this I can hear the stones being removed... But that will be the next posting...

It must be "a male thing"... Every man in this house wanted to work on the top of the roof...

The concrete surface on the chimney was quite difficult to removed, but this real men team worked through with determination and next step was a pieces of cake...

The next step was to remove the high chimney from the roof top to the attic floor level...

Seuraava vaihe oli purkaa savupiippu katonrajasta vintinlattiarajaan...

Removing the clay bricks were easy, these ancient bricks are quite thin and the clay in between them could be removed easily... And they just kept the bricks upstairs and the clay went down by the chimney...

No worries... This not smoke...Only bit of dust ones again...

Ei hätää... Tämä ei ole savua... Vaan taas kerran hieman pölyä...

Chimney almost gone from the attic...

Savupiippu melkein purettu vintiltä...

So here is the upper part of the double chimney... Yes because there were two fireplaces and one was only added only later, there were two chimneys right to the top...

French fashion is everywhere...

Ranskalaista muotia missä tahansa oletkin...

Today the front of the chimney is down also in the bedroom and now is time to attack the stone wall...

These bricks just went sliding down from the bedroom to the living room downstairs... And I will finish this posting now and more to come on the chimney soon...

Nämä tiilet laskeutuivat liukurataa pitkin makuuhuoneesta alakerran olohuoneeseen...

A LOVELY FINDING...IHANA LÖYTÖ...

Yesterday was Sunday and we decided to have a picnic and clear a special place in the same time...

Eilen oli sunnuntai, joten päätimme lähteä piknikille ja samalla putsata aivan ihanan erikoisen paikan...

On the way down to this place there is a well, which keeps some water...

Samalla matkalla pellon reunaa alaspäin tarkistimme vanhan kaivon syvyyttä...

The end of the field is the limit of our property and in this bush, there is a hidden pearl...

The spring...

Lähde...

Behind all this there is a spring that gives life to this ancient place where women use to come and wash all the linen and clothes...Now it's looking forgotten and miserable...But the spring brings clean water to this stone basin and the little stream is supposed to take it further down the water...But this place has been forgotten and trees and plants has overgrown on top of it and dead leaves had made the water really muddy...

So we are cleaning and opening up the place and later on Gerald need to come with the tractor to clean the huge amount of mud away before we can clean the large stone basin properly...

After enjoying our picnic lunch we all had a short nap in the nature... Only sound...Birds...

Piknik-lounaan jälkeen me kaikki nautimme lyhyestä levosta luonnonkeskellä... Ainoana äänenä...Linnut...

Before heading up back to the home we just took most of the rotten wood and mud out from the basin...

Ennen kotiin palaamista puhdistimme altaan märäntyneistä oksista ja mudasta...

BACK OF THE KITCHEN...APUKEITTIÖ...

Clearing last wall cover from the stone walls with a help of an other Jaana...

Tässä hakkaillaan viimeisiä seinäpintoja irti kahden Jaana voimalla...

For the next job I needed to change my look...

Seuraavaan hommaan tarvitsin uuden lookin...

This fireplace was built just in the corner of this room and the chimney had taken off on the roof but the upper room still had a part of it, so to demolish it, I had to start from the upper level first...

The chimney was made of flat clay bricks and as a cement they used in those old times just some kind of clay... So I don't think the insurance company will like these type of chimneys very much...And as I am writing this posting, at the next door room one of my next posting is falling down... A much bigger and taller chimney a double one...

TO CUT...OR NOT TO CUT...KAATAA...TAI EI KAATAA...

So the question has been, should we cut these two big old trees in the garden that gives nice shade but it hides all the view and nothing grows under them...So our opinion were that we should cut them down and really start with a new garden design...But friends thought that we are making a big mistake if we taking them down, those ancient trees...

Then last Friday came this young man with our friends Christian and Rodolphe...At the beginning he looked like he had all the equipment for climbing a mountain, but as extra gear he has a chain saw...

After analyzing these two huge trees, he told us that they have been taken care badly and we could not get something nice out of them by just pruning them, but as a professional tree cutter he felt that it was pity to take them down, but they had been badly damage at the top, probably by the 99' storm...

So he started cutting them branch by branch and finally got down to largest part of it... Still looking happy after all exercise he had to do to get these two trees down...

To get the first tree down after he had cut through the stump, he had a rope attached to the top part and we all were supposed to pull it down, but the first one did not want to fall, so Gerald got the car and pull the tree down...

Puun runko oli jo sahattu poikki ja latvaan laitettu köysi, jotta voisimme kaikki vetää puun nurin, ensimmäinen puu kuitenkin vaati auton voiman, jotta se saatiin kaadettua maahan...

Here you can see the color of this wood and it was about 200 years old, part of the branches were damages and had hollow parts on them... The name of the tree is Yew, and it's wood can be use for the furnitures so we are thinking to make some planks out of those big trunks.... The tree is toxic for humans and animals, but I was told that they make anti-cancerious medication with it... The freshly cut wood actually didn't had a nice smell like most of the trees.

The next day...Gerald with the help of our friend Peter are cleaning all the rest and sawing the bigger branches to a small pieces and now at least we have a sunny garden at the back...
